First let me lead-off by saying one of my favorite things to watch when I was a kid was the Saturday Game of the Week on NBC. Without a doubt they would schedule at least one game pitting Boston against California.

This is reason number 2,457,731 why I love baseball: Those team were LOADED with offensive players. Cali brought Reggie, Fred Lynn, Rod Carew, Grich, Downing. While Boston sent out Hobson, Fisk, Rice, Evans, George Scott. They played wall-ball in Fenway and long-ball in Cali. The scores of those games would be 9-7 or 11-8 and last well over three hours. Good times.

Baltimore Orioles vs. California Angels
Anaheim Stadium, Anaheim, California

The first game of the three-game series goes to California in extra-innings 6-5. The Angels scored two runs in the eighth to tie the game at five against Storm Davis and Sammy Stewart. Don Welchel (0-2) went 1/3 of an inning allowing two hits and two walks.

The Orioles committed three errors and walked eight Angel hitters. Mike Flanagan started and went 5 innings allowing three runs on six hits. He walked three and had two strikeouts.

Rod Carew went 5-7 2B, 1R and 3RBI

Brian Downing was 4-6 2B and 3R

Doug DeCinces (Cal) was 1-6 with a RBI

Bobby Grich was 1-3 2B, R, RBI

John Lowenstein was 2-4 2-run bomb (2)

Al Bumbry slammed his first homer of the year.

Baltimore Orioles vs. California Angels
Anaheim Stadium, Anaheim, California

Scott McGregor and Tommy John went head-to-head in the second game of the series. Despite the two teams combining for 23 hits, only four runs are scored and both pitchers went the distance. The Orioles prevailed 3-1.

McGregor (2-0) went nine allowing nine hits and one run. Tommy John (2-1) went eight innings allowing 13 hits (12 singles) and three runs.

Every Oriole starter had at least one hit

Baltimore Orioles vs. Anaheim Angels
Anaheim Stadium, Anaheim, California

In the rubber game of the three-game set the Angels prevailed 7-3 behind 14 hits. Mike Witt (1-3) came on in relief of starter Goltz to finish the last 3.1 scoreless innings against Baltimore. Dennis Martinez (1-4) lasted only 5 innings allowing 9 hits and five earned runs.

Rod Carew went 4-5 (series 9-16) 2R, 2B, 3B

Brian Downing hit his second home run of the year off of Dennis Martinez

Tim Foli had 2 RBI

Al Bumbry had a 2B and a RBI

Cal Ripken hit his second home run of the year off Goltz in the sixth inning

Leo Hernandez went 3-4 R, Error

Next up a two-game set with the Athletics and a three-game set with the Mariners.
