Title: Marlins: Dealing and Spending

According to the Miami Herald, the Marlins have been in serious talks to trade Mike Jacobs, Scott Olsen, and Kevin Gregg.
The Royals nearly became suitors for Jacobs last week but the Fish weren't happy with the health of the pitching prospect that they were going to receive. Still, talks with other teams remain ongoing. The Marlins are hoping prospect Gaby Sanchez can fill in for Jacobs this season. Moving Olsen would also open up a rotation spot for Andrew Miller.

I hope the O's take a shot at Olsen especially, and Hermida.
The bit doesn't say what Florida is looking for in return.
If KC gets Jacobs, that should make somebody available. Shealy and or Ka'aihue.

Olsen's WHIP is considerably better than Miller's and he is a mere 1 year older. I don't know what lies behind any decision to move Olsen versus Miller. (Was Miller injured this year? Does Miller have better "stuff"?) I have only seen Miller pitch. The last time was when he was beaten up by the Nationals at the second game played at Nationals Park. (I can't recall who won the games, but it was ugly.) Maybe the O's could try to trade for Miller? I've always liked him since spotting him in the Cape Cod league. However, last I saw, he was extremely rough around the edges. He had command issues that weren't apparent in Cape Cod or in college.

The difference between Miller and Olson would be less fights in the dugouts. Olson has a temper that sometimes rubs the wrong way on teammates. Despite his faults, teams tolerate him because he can pitch.

New team rule: Anyone with 200 IP and an ERA under 3.0 is automatically right.

Royals acquired first baseman Mike Jacobs from the Marlins for RHP Leo Nunez.
The Royals' finished with a .320 team OBP that ranked 27th in the majors last season, and Dayton Moore's answer to that problem is to pick up a first baseman who finished at .299. Jacobs did hit 32 homers, but he's a 28-year-old with a career .262/.318/.498 line and he's a below average defender at first base. With Alex Gordon looking like a liability at third base and Kila Ka'aihue and Ryan Shealy both potentially capable of posting 800 OPSs in the majors, this move only serves to give Royals fans more hope of another 75-win season in 2009. The Marlins will likely let Gaby Sanchez and Dallas McPherson battle it out to become Jacobs' replacement. Sanchez will be the favorite, but the Marlins would be better defensively with McPherson at third and Jorge Cantu at first.

Time to call about our future 1B.
