Title: O's special announcement!
Description: New uniforms?

HotTubMan - October 27, 2008 06:37 PM (GMT)
I received an invitation to a special event from The "Baltimore" Orioles.

On November 12th at 12:00pm at the Gallery at Harborplace.

I expect to see a few prized Orioles wearing our new road uniform with a similar script to the home jersey but sporting the Baltimore script.

Welcome back Baltimore!

There is also rumbling about a new O's hat. Perhaps the cartoon bird could be making a Sunday visit?

I would love to have a Sunday Black alternate uniform with Baltimore on it in Orange script with the reincarnate Cartoon Bird on the hat.

Then maybe the team can start playing like the 70's version.

In other news I read where Sports Illustrated thinks Wieters could be the best catcher in the American League next year. Cool deal!

Pick a decade. Any decade. Just for variety's sake, I'd like to see them start playing like the '50s version. At least that only lasted from '54 on. Bad baseball should have term limits.

I wonder if they'll change the home white uniforms at all. They're bland. Not the problem, but not exciting. I heard they tried to sign the cartoon bird for 3 years to come back to their hats but negotiations got hung up over a 4th year and a full no-trade clause.

As long as they don't pick up any of those free agent uniforms from the former Rays.

I personally love the home whites but would like to see the Sunday Alt along with the Friday one. Bring the birdie back for Sundays.

The way we played on Sunday last year shows we need to make some changes.

Just win, baby.

I'd like to see a home Orange alternate, and go with black jerseys on the road all the time personally.

I happen to have a taste for classic things.

That said, I'm about keeping the jersey colors as they are now (I do like the black they wear at home on Fridays) and maybe bringing back the orange one to wear once in a while on Sundays or something.

I also like the old 1950's cartoon bird better than the 60's/80's cartoon bird. Or else, the angry bird would be a pretty nice retro shoulder patch on the jerseys.

I like all of the suggestions here. I really dislike the home white jersey, so either the black or orange will be a change for the better.

Sluggo - October 28, 2008 03:37 PM (GMT)
I say they put a bird patch on the left side of the home white jersey, and wear a "B" on the cap.

I hope they have black socks with 2 or 3 orange rings. I think that would make a more interesting look for the guys who show a lot of leg.

I have always been a fan of the socks and think your suggestion is a great one. Not bad for an older feller.

About the black uniforms, I like them but opposing players love them even more. Quite a few players have commented how much easier it is to see the ball coming off the black uniform.

I have thought about this since it was brought up a few years ago. I am sure some statistician has checked what a batters numbers are of a certain pitcher when wearing the white or black uniform..hint

I knew you would respond to that :)

That is interesting. I wouldn't think that the shirt color would matter so much as maybe the sleeve color might. Who knows? Perhaps the batter's short term focus IS distracted by the proximity of other white colored things (shirt). This is the reason for tattered shirt sleeves being outlawed, but again that is on the arm not the torso.

Since some teams wear black with great frequency (Rockies, Marlins, Diamondbacks, White Sox, etc) there ought to be extensive data to mine on the subject.

I'm no pitching coach, nor have I played one on TV, but I have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express.

However, those credentials notwithstanding, it seems to me that given the height and angle of the pitcher's hand/arm at release and the shortness of the sleeves, then the jersey color would not be a factor at all. If the hitter hasn't picked up the ball at release he is unlikely to do much with the pitch no matter what color the jersey is.

Ahh...but have you stayed in the new Jamison Inn?

If a player is never going to pick up the ball it doesn't matter if a playmate is throwing it, but a darker background clearly helps a player pick up the ball.

Now hitting it is the question. I could always pick up the ball but couldn't hit certain kinds of pitches if I saw them clear as day. Which inflates the subject.

The O's wear their black uniforms on Friday night yet players say it's harder to pick up the ball during the day.

In certain stadiums, ie Fenway, they have to put tarps down during day games in certain sections and aren't allowed to sell those seats but at night they can have all the white shirts they want to sitting in them.

Why can some players hit during the day and some hit better at night?

......getting deeper in the Tub.

…Why can some players hit during the day and some hit better at night?

Well because the players who hit well in the day time don't have a very active social life so they go to bed early and are in tip top shape for the day games. Since they get up early from not having a social life they are tired at night and so they don't hit well then.

Players who hit well at night eat a lot of carrots to see better at night plus they have a very active social life and they stay up late after night games carousing and all so they sleep late the next day and are still sleep logy and cranky for day games and therefore they don't do well.

Just my opinion…well duh of course it's "just my opinion" no self-respecting baseball authority would have written such drivel. Well maybe the dyslexic non-MLB approved writer who sees Tillman as a lefthander might have written it.

Jack, the obvious way to test your theory would be to analyze Aubrey Huff's splits. What say you?

Skipjack - October 29, 2008 06:23 PM (GMT)
Hey Sluggo…Actually Huff did well in both day and night situation.
42 day games…..333 BA…..9 HR…958 OPS
112 night games…294 BA…23 HR…895 OPS

I think that may be due to Baltimore closing bars at 2 AM, which he railed against. He did virtually the same in home and away games.

Maybe the allure of the XXX rated cable fare and room service in the away hotels was enough to keep him in after night games.

Here's a link to a nice article from 2004 about the choices that go into designing new uniforms, etc.

nice article to read..

Jack those numbers by Huff surprise me. You would think a night owl would have a noticeable increase in production at night.

"I myself perform much better at night" while a guy like you is wondering why I am still asleep at such a beautiful time of the day.

i've been watching the Series True Blood a little to closely
