Title: Dunn or Manny?
Description: We Could Use Either
Vladfan - October 31, 2008 11:31 AM (GMT)
I know it goes against the grain of rebuilding but this team would be best served adding one to the lineup.
I think we have a solid shot at Dunn, who stated in the past that he wouldn't mind coming to Baltimore.
His bat would inject life into the O's lineup and provide a needed power source.
Of course, if Houston wants him, this will be Carlos Lee all over again.
Manny wouldn't mind coming here and he's a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer who's still a premium player.
Any thoughts?

Manny wouldn't mind coming here, but would he mind staying here?
He's a great hitter, no doubt. He's an even better hitter when he's happy.
But by the end of the season, has anyone actually been happy? At the beginnng of every season, we hear about the great clubhouse, and how its a great group of guys, and all that. But where is all that by the end of the season?
Now bring someone in who seems to be on an emotional roller coaster at times, and is that a good match?
From a purely baseball standpoint, it would be great. But add in personalities and I could see that being a contract we regret.

When did Manny say he wouldn't mind coming here?
Not that I think it will happen, but if they did get either Manny or Dunn, would they trade Luke Scott?

I'd try to trade Scott to a team with a quality, lower-level prospect like Baez or Silverio with the Dodgers if we signed either free-agent.

Both would be decent fits in the O's lineup. But Manny is the far better hitter.
Manny will go where the money is. That being the case, it won't be LA and I hope it isn't Baltimore. I think the O's can spend Manny money more wisely.
As far as Dunn, I expect he will command huge dollars. Is he a player worth huge dollars? Tough question because he plays such an unusual game.
EDIT: I'll bet right now that the Nats make a hard run at Dunn and sign him.

There is no way I personally would even think of signing a guy like Manny. Calling him a guy was tough.
Meanwhile, Hank Steinbrenner has been quoted as saying the Yanks would make a play for Manny.
I've never heard Manny say he wouldn't mind coming to Baltimore but I did hear him loud and clear that he would like to play for the Yanks. Boston fans didn't take to kind to it since he was wearing their uniform at the time.
But for the life of me, I don't know why anyone would want him in our clubhouse. He's going to be 37 years old, and, aren't we rebuilding with quality attitude and the Oriole way along with talent.
I vote 100% NO!

A year or two back, when there were all kinds of rumors swirling about an O's/Red Sox deal involving Tejada and Ramirez, Manny supposedly stated to the media that he would welcome a trade to Baltimore.

Ok I vaguely remember that. At the time though, I think he would have played in Japan as he was extremely po'd at Boston.

Yeah, just answering the question. He definitely wanted out of Boston in the worst way.
Like I've said Manny will go where the money is. If it happened to be Baltimore I'm sure he'd happily play there. It won't be though.
If I was a gambling man, I'd have to say look for Manny in navy blue pinstripes come April. It makes the most sense to me.

Looks like Manny will be staying with the Dodgers... He would be a fool to turn down this much cash

Yeah I saw that this morning and was pretty surprised by it. Based on what I had heard, I didn't think the Dodgers had the cash.
I do think the contract length could be an issue. I'm guessing Manny and his agent would like more than 2 years.
