Title: Anyone read this months SI?
Description: BRob at SS?

Friday night a friend of mine who gets SI said that there was something about Brob playing short stop. So I checked online.

Five radical moves that would give the offseason some sizzle

4. The Orioles move Brian Roberts from second to shortstop.

Roberts, playing his walk year in 2009, was Baseball America's National Defensive Player of the Year at shortstop in college. The O's didn't have a reliable shortstop in 2008, and given their farm system and the players on the market, they aren't likely to have one in '09. Roberts would be better than the available options and allow Baltimore -- which is closing in on respectability -- to sign one of many stopgap second basemen (such as Ray Durham and Mark Grudzielanek). If successful, the move would give Roberts even more trade value, something the team needs to maximize.

I don't know about you, but I personally think that's just a bad idea.

i agree with you, he's developed into a top defensive 2nd baseman now...why mess with success and risk screwing up his trade value if he ends up forgetting how to field a ball

I also think its a bad idea. Remember when we had Hairston/Roberts, and Roberts would play SS? Seemed like every throw was an adventure. So now that he's older, I doubt moving him to shortstop would work out better. And even if it did, so now we'd be looking for a 2nd baseman instead.

As for maximizing trade value- is an average shortstop really worth more than an above average 2nd baseman?

That takes the cake.

Only if we do it. Otherwise we still got the cake and Roberts is still at second where he belongs.

I can't get worked up over a SI radical sizzle piece.

I'm not saying they should or will do it because I think Roberts would struggle at SS, but if the O's really were weighing all their options, I would hope they considered the possibility of moving Roberts to SS. I really believe it's that type of creative thinking that the O's have to do more of in order to compete with the other AL East clubs.
