Title: GM Meeting Starts Today
Description: …I like MacPhail's philosophy

This MacPhail quote from the Sun:

| "I think I've been pretty clear that we don't look at free agency as a panacea. We're not going to be able to buy our way out. We need to increase our foundation of talent." |
I think a shortstop and a couple of mid level veteran starters signed after Christmas will be the sum of the O's free agent moves.
I look for trades to add to the "foundation of talent." Roberts? Hernandez? Cabrera?
I think the Birds win at least 75 games next season.
I think I hear the sound of "Happy Days are Here Again" beginning to increase in volume, my friends…

Let's hope the O's front office leaves the scissors and tweezers behind this time.

:D You know that won't happen…good grooming is soooooo important.
MacPhail's speed is ahh…well…deliberate. He'll get some face time with prospective trade partners and agents, exchange a few parameters, express a modicum of interest and make a firm date to talk again before Christmas. Then it's off to the local Tweeze-N-Snip for some shopping.

I think I'd be happy with a shortstop and a couple good pitchers being added at some point before spring training.
Whether it's this week, next month, or next July, I think the O's have to move Aubrey Huff at some point and see if they can capitalize on Huff's year last year. I just don't see him hitting the level of production in 2008 ever again and I don't want to pay him any more than what he's already making. In my opinion, the O's are looking pretty damn smart now for not jumping the gun and dealing Huff last winter.
I'll hold off on any real predictions till March. But if they go into 2009 with the same pitching staff they had this season, I'll tell everyone now to lock away all the sharp objects in their house for their own protection.
