Title: Phillies are aggressively pursuing Matt Holliday

The Phillies are aggressively pursuing Matt Holliday, sources told SI.com's Jon Heyman.
The A's, Mets and Rays have also been mentioned in connection with Holliday. The Phillies tried to trade for both Holliday and Brian Fuentes in July, with Shane Victorino, Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson and others possibly going to Colorado. The Phillies would likely make every attempt to hold on to Victorino now. That would leave Carrasco as the centerpiece of a deal.

I guess the hell they are pursuing Holliday. Who wouldn't? Orioles, Or-i-oles, any mention of the Orioles?

Holliday is the only player in baseball that cannot cost too much. He is worth every bit of it, regardless of what "it" is.

Holliday is a damn good player. I like him an awful lot.

Still, there's definitely a price that's too high if you're the Orioles. Where they are now, they still just need lots of good ballplayers. Philly, on the other hand, have the ballplayers to win again and wouldn't be hurt by trading 3, 4 or even 5 talented young ballplayers for him.

Much as I hate to say it, the O's won't get much better by trading a lot of their top farmhands for him.

EDIT: If Philly gets Holliday, they will have two of my favorite ballplayers on their club in Holliday and Utley.

What does Philly have in their farm system that's so great?

If I'm Colorado, unless the Phillies want to include Ryan Howard in the deal, I look elsewhere.

I'd agree with that. Just because Philly might be willing to pay the price, it doesn't mean they have the ducats.

I would trade Howard to acquire Holliday many times over.

And if I'm the Rockies, we have a deal.

Holliday becomes a free-agent after next season.

:D

The bottom line is that the Rays, A's, and Mets have much more to offer Colorado than the Phillies have at this point in time.

The A's have the next wave of elite pitchers: Gio Gonzalez, James Simmons, Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson, and Josh Outman all have incredible upside. They have Carlos Gonzalez, Daric Barton, and Adrian Cardenas as position players with solid potential.

The Rays have Desmond Jennings, Reid Brignac, and a slew of others in regards to position players. They have Wade Davis, Jeff Niemann, Matt Walker, etc. pitching-wise.

The Mets have Fernando Martinez and Wilmer Flores as elite prospects. They have a quality guy like Jon Niese waiting for his turn in a big league rotation.

In Fact, the Dodgers have a nice farm system.

The Phils and Cubbies have very little ammunition as far as trades are concerned.

No no no, one of those guys might make it as a throw-in. The Rays have Crawford and Upton, and the Mets have Reyes and Wright.
The A's, Oakland Pathetics have not.

Sources tell FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal that the Rockies and Cardinals have discussed swapping Matt Holliday for Ryan Ludwick, Skip Schumaker and Mitchell Boggs.
Ludwick exploded with 37 homers and 113 RBI in 2008 and Schumaker had a nice season from the leadoff spot, but both are around 30 years of age and mostly unproven. Boggs is also a bit of a mystery. The 24-year-old was unimpressive in six starts at the major league level last season, posting a 7.41 ERA and 13/22 K/BB ratio. Ludwick is a nice centerpiece, but it seems the Rockies could do better.
