Title: Speaking of Fleecings....
Description: Yanks Add Swisher

Vladfan - November 14, 2008 04:12 PM (GMT)
Swisher can play first base...Yanks making a good run at C.C.

Does this mean they don't intend to sign Teixeira?

One less competitor for the O's to contend with?

draftermatt - November 14, 2008 04:56 PM (GMT)
That was my thought too. They want to spend money elsewhere, so they get Swisher to play 1st.

Either that or they intend on letting Abreu walk, and Swisher is their RF.

Don't think it helps the Orioles though.

No Tex for the Yanks.

Yeah, I think this takes the Yanks out of the Teixeira bidding.

Truth be told, I'm more concerned about the Mets, Red Sox, and Angels. Watch out for the Nationals too; I think they could be a surprise club here.

i thought it was fascinating that they went after Scott Olsen...that whole team is like an adult version of the Bad News Bears, misfits and troublemakers. not knocking that - it's certainly one way of collecting a pool of talent on the cheap.

If Teixeira wants to go to a contender (supposedly), why would he consider the Nationals?

Plus, I don't think Angelos would let him go to the Nationals even if it means breaking the bank.

Is that contender question a serious one? OK, well, why would he consider the Orioles then?

If you don't think the Nats could be a player in the Teixeira chase, think about these things:

1. Washington, D.C. would also be a homecoming for Teixeira, so they really have the same marketing angle the Orioles do;

2. It is a fair argument to say that the Nationals are no further from contention than the Orioles are. In fact, the Nats have a lot of pieces in place in their lineup that just might be waiting for a presence in the middle of the lineup to get the ball rolling. They probably even have a better pitching staff going from the front of their rotation all the way through the back of their bullpen;

3. The Lerners and the Nationals have the cash to throw at Teixeira and they are in a position where they have to make a splash;

4. Teixeira would fit in just as seamlessly in the Nats' infield and lineup as he would in Baltimore - both need a slugging run producer and both are looking for a 1B.

5. Angelos ultimately has no power here, other than signing the check.

The Yanks are not out of the Teixeira sweepstakes by any means. Swisher is a fallback 1B. They have to be thinking about the possibility of losing Abreu, Johnny Damon just turned 35, Matsui will turn 35 next season, and what the hell happened to Melky Cabrera? Swisher will wind up in the outfield.

EDIT: FWIW, the Yankees' roster currently lists Swisher as OF and Matsui as DH

I would never count the Yanks out of anything.

As for the Nats it's an interesting equation and one I doubt he would take.

The O's would match any offer from the Nats and Tex grew up rooting for the O's, and that is the only reason the O's have a great shot at landing him.

I would be very surpised if he even considered Washington, but as a fan signing with the Nats would be the next best thing to coming to Baltimore for me. Just keep him out of the AL East.

MLB radio is confirming what Sluggo says, Yanks are still in the Tex hunt.
Upon signing Tex, Hank could then flip Swisher for a list of prospects to create an illusion of thrift-intelligence.
