Title: Roberts out 4-6 days

Brian Roberts (abdomen) expects to be out "4-6 days max." Fantasy Source spin: Roberts suffered a strained abdominal muscle in the first inning Friday and was held out of Saturday's lineup. He did not take batting practice and is likely to sit idle until at least Tuesday. Julio Lugo is filling in. |
This update scared me till I read it. With Roberts healthy doing what he does and once the pen is in order, we could win a lot of games.

News: Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts was held out of Saturday night's game against Toronto with an abdominal strain, an injury that could land the two-time All-Star on the 15-day disabled list. Roberts was hurt Friday, when he stole second base in the first inning of a 7-6 loss to the Blue Jays. Roberts stayed in the game long enough to score, but did not return. "He is better than he was (Friday)," manager Dave Trembley said Saturday. "It is right now day to day. I think I will have a better idea (Sunday) of when he will be available to play." Roberts was held out of batting practice Saturday. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Julio Lugo. Analysis: Asked if the injury could force Roberts onto the DL, Trembley said, "Right now, the good news for me is that it's not as severe as we first thought. But I'm not able to tell you when he will play, and I'm not able to tell you if it is a DL or not a DL." Said Roberts: "They just want to give it one more day and see how it reacts for another night. Certainly, the second day will probably give us a better indication of how long it's going to be. ... Maybe four or five, six days at max, I"ll be back out there playing. But we'll see how it reacts in the next 24 hours." Roberts missed much of spring training with a herniated disk in his back. Trembley said the back injury was not related to the abdominal strain. It has been a tough 2010 for Roberts. Aside from the injuries, he has gotten off to a slow start, hitting just .143 in four games. He does have two steals, so apparently his speed hasn't tailed off. Roberts is a viable Fantasy 2B when healthy, so continue to keep tabs on his progress heading into Week 2 (April 12-18). |

A bad word can be inserted anywhere, and repeated.

Man, this is getting worrisome.

| News: MLB.com reports that Orioles 2B Brian Roberts (abdominal) has been placed on the 15-day DL. The Baltimore Sun reports that Roberts had an epidural for his herniated disc in his back because the slide that he was injured on irritated the nerve in his back. Roberts will be out longer than the 15 days stated by the disabled list terms. |

That isn't good news about Roberts.
Poor ol' Trembley, his future is to be determined by wins this year and here he is without his premier lead-off hitter and no closer. I think we'd better start planning his "farewell party."
At least with Roberts there is hope that he will return sometime this season but with that agile spastic Gonzalez who knows when his Rube Goldberg like mechanics will be tuned up enough to risk turning over a lead to him.

News: The Orioles still have no timetable for a return for second baseman Brian Roberts, reports MASNSports.com. Roberts has yet to begin baseball activities and it is uncertain when that will happen at this point. Roberts says his back is feeling better and that he remains convinced he will play again this season. "We're just continuing to do some physical therapy," Roberts said. "Other than that, we're just waiting for it to get better." Roberts mentioned the possibility of missing the entire first half of the season. "I wish I could tell you something. I wish I knew something, but I just don't right this second," he said. "It could be three weeks from now, it could be three months from now. I honestly don't know." Analysis: Roberts stated later that he doesn't think it will take three months. Surgery still isn't a consideration. If that is good news, it doesn't do much for Fantasy owners who thought he'd be available much sooner than this. Roberts remains a must-stash Fantasy 2B but will likely be out much longer than expected at this point. |
Getting "better" all the time
Career200 - May 3, 2010 10:18 AM (GMT)
Like I said before, herniated disc injuries are serious business. Yet, Roberts is liable to wake up one day and feel great. Backs are weird things.
Finding a starting 2B should be the priority this offseason. Wigginton's hot bat will cool off, and once it does, he is not going to be able to hold down that position for long.
Milto - May 30, 2010 01:13 AM (GMT)
Orioles 2B Brian Roberts hit from both sides of the plate on Saturday in live batting practice in Sarasota, Fla., reports MLB.com. Roberts also fielded around 50 grounders at second base and all reports came back positive. "I think we all are [pleased]," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said of the report. "[Extended Spring Training coordinator] Gary Kendall made it a point to call me. I think we're all encouraged. Brian was excited. [Sunday] is an off-day in extended, but he asked if there could be a couple of coaches [there] so he can work out again. It's a good sign."
Analysis: Roberts has been slowly working back into baseball shape. He is eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list on June 9, though the Orioles think he'll likely need a little more time.
Milto - June 8, 2010 04:25 AM (GMT)
News: The Baltimore Sun reports Orioles 2B Brian Roberts (back) was unable to play in an extended spring game on Monday, and Baltimore president Andy MacPhail said the injured second baseman will meet with a doctor in Florida on Tuesday. "We're just being careful," MacPhail said in a text message.
Analysis: Roberts suffered what was called a minor setback on Friday due to "unrelated back pain". But now he is going to the doctor to get a checkup on his back. This seems a little bit fishy, but we hope to know more by Tuesday. Any kind of setback could delay Roberts' return even more.

Roberts & Rollins for me, Bark.

Brittany Ghiroli does not add a lot, but here is her blog:
All is not well for Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, who did not play in Monday's extended spring game and continues to be plagued with "unrelated back pain" in Sarasota. He is expected to be reexamined tomorrow. Roberts was supposed to start playing in extended Spring games this past Friday, instead he was held out and was being treated "symptomatically" according to president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail.
Roberts wasn't expected to play Saturday's game, but given that it's Monday, the unrelated back pain is looking like a little more than the "minor setback" it was originally described as.
Roberts' originally schedule had him progressing up to a full game on June 10. That obviously will come later now. Whether this back pain is related to his herniated disc or not, I will hopefully have more information pregame tomorrow after Roberts gets checked out.
I am just planning for him to be gone for the year. Then, any return is gravy. Not necessarily so that he will be out all year, but every two or three steps forward are followed by a day or two off.

Samuel on Roberts: Not looking good
Brian Roberts, 2B BAL
News: Brian Roberts is still having lower back issues and he will need more tests and rest, according to MLB.com. Manager Juan Samuel suggested to media Tuesday that Roberts' return from the 60-day DL is not close.
Analysis: The Orioles did not talk about season-ending surgery, but Roberts looks like he won't return in the first half at this point.
Milto - June 16, 2010 08:40 PM (GMT)
MLB.com reported on Tuesday that Orioles interim manager Juan Samuel spoke with injured 2B Brian Roberts (back) and said the injured second baseman's timetable is 4-6 weeks. "He's a couple of weeks away from baseball activities from what he told me," Samuel said. "But it sounds like in four to six weeks, we should see him around here. According to the report, that's basically what the target is. To me, it's a positive for us. There's so much uncertainty there. That's something that we're going to be looking forward to, but at the same time, we want him to get comfortable."
A boatload of BS. Might not be a bad idea to call the Cubs while they are lovestruck with Castro.

Why wouldn't we let go of Lugo and pick up Iwamora?

Roberts goes 3 for 3 in rehab
Brian Roberts, 2B BAL
News: Injured Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts finally began a rehab assignment with the GCL Orioles on Monday night as he is trying to work his way back from a season-long back injury. Roberts started his rehab off with a bang as he went 3 for 3 as the second baseman and leadoff hitter, reports MASNSports.com. Roberts is expected to DH in Tuesday's game for the GCL Orioles and will join Double-A Bowie next week at some point.
As long as Patterson is extremely hot I hope Buck will let him retain the lead-off slot. Roberts should bat 2nd and get back to pinging doubles around parks and clearing the wall 12-15 times a season. Plus, Patterson can score from first on hits Brian places in RF.
Career200 - July 13, 2010 11:50 PM (GMT)
Yeah, despite going 3 for 3 I'd still expect Roberts to need some time to get back his timing. That's assuming he stays pain free too. I wouldn't expect him in Baltimore for a couple weeks, and that's assuming he can stay pain free. Once he's up, batting 2nd in the order seems like an ideal spot for him.
I think the first half of this season confirms that the O's offense has revolved around Roberts for a long time now.
Milto - July 18, 2010 12:50 AM (GMT)
News: Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts could return from his three-month stay on the disabled list as soon as next weekend. He is expected to join Double-A Bowie on a rehabilitation assignment Monday, and if all goes well, Roberts will return to his customary spot atop the Baltimore lineup within a week. "He could," interim manager Juan Samuel said Saturday. "It depends on his games there (in Bowie). Anything can happen. He's anxious, he wants to be around, he wants to play."
He is a natural hitter. He will hit as long as like Dan says, he is pain free. I will add virtually.
I truly wish him well, aside from the O's.
Milto - July 23, 2010 03:56 AM (GMT)
Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is ready to end his 14-week stay on the disabled list. Roberts has been sidelined since April 9, when he strained an abdominal muscle sliding into second base against Toronto. He's also been dealing with a herniated disk in his back, an injury that limited his participation in spring training. The two-time All-Star has been playing for Double-A Bowie in a rehabilitation assignment this week. On Thursday, Roberts declared himself fit to return to the Orioles. Speaking in the Baltimore clubhouse, Roberts said: "There's nothing I don't think I can do."
Interim manager Juan Samuel says the team will wait for the medical staff to clear Roberts before deciding whether to activate him from the DL. Roberts batted .483 in eight rehab games between Double-A and the rookie Gulf Coast League. The Orioles were hoping to avoid bringing Roberts off the DL until after a series in Toronto next week because they didn't feel his back would hold up on the turf.
Jay - July 23, 2010 12:53 PM (GMT)
I heard an interview with him yesterday on the Fan, and he sounded real excited about returning. They asked him about the turf in Toronto, and he didn't think it would be an issue because the turf in Rogers Centre (is that the current name of it?), is very soft, not like you're walking on carpeted concrete.
Roberts returning to the lineup should give the birds a lift, and hopefully help avoid 100 losses (which is still very likely).
Jay - July 23, 2010 05:32 PM (GMT)
Roberts to be activated and in the lineup tonight (per Orioles Insider):
| QUOTE |
This probably shouldn't come as a surprise, but the Orioles are leaning toward reinstating second baseman Brian Roberts from the 60-day disabled list and having him in the lineup tonight against the Minnesota Twins.
A final decision hasn't been made yet, and apparently won't be until Roberts reports to Camden Yards in a couple of hours. However, as I said above, that's currenty what the plan is though that could change. Roberts certainly has been pushing to return tonight and it appears that he'll get his wish.
Roberts' addition will likely prompt the team to designated infielder Scott Moore for assignment. That would open up both a 25-man and 40-man space for Roberts. |
