Title: It's official: Cal's in the HOF
Career200 - January 9, 2007 07:05 PM (GMT)
Cal is in with 98.5% of the vote. Tony Gwynn was the only other inductee with 97.5%.

98.5% is one of the highest ever totals ever. I think Seaver & Ryanthe ony ones with a higher %...
McGwire tanks, and I think it's funny Jay Buhner got a vote... He must have a sportswriter in his family.
Another year for Gossage to stay bitter!!!

I like Gossage. The only other player on that list that I really liked aside from pre-Balco McGwire was Saberhagen. He had no chance, but the man absolutely dominated teams in 1989.

He was a 100% for me.
Claiming that he played during the Steroid era is mediocre, so is arguing that no one have been 100% before.
Ripken was a great ballplayer, a class act guy, a hard worker a has the numbers.
Does he get the most votes (in quantity) ever?

yes, he does.
"Ripken established a record by being named on 537 ballots, breaking the previous mark of 491 by Nolan Ryan in 1999. Ripken's percentage of 98.53 percent is the third highest in the history of BBWAA balloting behind Tom Seaver (98.83 in 1992) and Ryan (98.79 in 1999)."

When you think of all the names who are in the HOF, and then consider that there has never been a unanimous inductee, Cal's 98.5% and Gwynn's 97.6% shows you the type of esteem those two men are held in.

I think the highest percentages ever show you how subjective and weird the hall voting is.
Tom Seaver was good..no doubt. But if you went up to someone who didn't know, and asked, "who has the highest percentage of votes," I'd bet you'd get a lot of answers...none of which would be Seaver.
