This update scared me till I read it. With Roberts healthy doing what he does and once the pen is in order, we could win a lot of games. -------------------- TKM 1.57

That isn't good news about Roberts.
Poor ol' Trembley, his future is to be determined by wins this year and here he is without his premier lead-off hitter and no closer. I think we'd better start planning his "farewell party." At least with Roberts there is hope that he will return sometime this season but with that agile spastic Gonzalez who knows when his Rube Goldberg like mechanics will be tuned up enough to risk turning over a lead to him. --------------------

Like I said before, herniated disc injuries are serious business. Yet, Roberts is liable to wake up one day and feel great. Backs are weird things.
Finding a starting 2B should be the priority this offseason. Wigginton's hot bat will cool off, and once it does, he is not going to be able to hold down that position for long. -------------------- "If everyone in this country had to manage a major league team, there would be no need for Social Security -- the job takes 10 to 15 years off your life. I've seen it do some strange things to people. If you don't smoke, you will. If you don't drink, you will. And if you do drink, you'll stop."

Orioles 2B Brian Roberts hit from both sides of the plate on Saturday in live batting practice in Sarasota, Fla., reports MLB.com. Roberts also fielded around 50 grounders at second base and all reports came back positive. "I think we all are [pleased]," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said of the report. "[Extended Spring Training coordinator] Gary Kendall made it a point to call me. I think we're all encouraged. Brian was excited. [Sunday] is an off-day in extended, but he asked if there could be a couple of coaches [there] so he can work out again. It's a good sign."
Analysis: Roberts has been slowly working back into baseball shape. He is eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list on June 9, though the Orioles think he'll likely need a little more time. -------------------- TKM 1.57

News: The Baltimore Sun reports Orioles 2B Brian Roberts (back) was unable to play in an extended spring game on Monday, and Baltimore president Andy MacPhail said the injured second baseman will meet with a doctor in Florida on Tuesday. "We're just being careful," MacPhail said in a text message.
Analysis: Roberts suffered what was called a minor setback on Friday due to "unrelated back pain". But now he is going to the doctor to get a checkup on his back. This seems a little bit fishy, but we hope to know more by Tuesday. Any kind of setback could delay Roberts' return even more. -------------------- TKM 1.57

Brittany Ghiroli does not add a lot, but here is her blog:
All is not well for Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, who did not play in Monday's extended spring game and continues to be plagued with "unrelated back pain" in Sarasota. He is expected to be reexamined tomorrow. Roberts was supposed to start playing in extended Spring games this past Friday, instead he was held out and was being treated "symptomatically" according to president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail. Roberts wasn't expected to play Saturday's game, but given that it's Monday, the unrelated back pain is looking like a little more than the "minor setback" it was originally described as. Roberts' originally schedule had him progressing up to a full game on June 10. That obviously will come later now. Whether this back pain is related to his herniated disc or not, I will hopefully have more information pregame tomorrow after Roberts gets checked out. I am just planning for him to be gone for the year. Then, any return is gravy. Not necessarily so that he will be out all year, but every two or three steps forward are followed by a day or two off. -------------------- ![]() |

Samuel on Roberts: Not looking good
Brian Roberts, 2B BAL News: Brian Roberts is still having lower back issues and he will need more tests and rest, according to MLB.com. Manager Juan Samuel suggested to media Tuesday that Roberts' return from the 60-day DL is not close. Analysis: The Orioles did not talk about season-ending surgery, but Roberts looks like he won't return in the first half at this point. -------------------- TKM 1.57

MLB.com reported on Tuesday that Orioles interim manager Juan Samuel spoke with injured 2B Brian Roberts (back) and said the injured second baseman's timetable is 4-6 weeks. "He's a couple of weeks away from baseball activities from what he told me," Samuel said. "But it sounds like in four to six weeks, we should see him around here. According to the report, that's basically what the target is. To me, it's a positive for us. There's so much uncertainty there. That's something that we're going to be looking forward to, but at the same time, we want him to get comfortable."
