Per the Sun:

QUOTE
Miguel Tejada has been scratched from tonight’s game and, according to an industry source, has been traded to the San Diego Padres, pending league approval.

When asked about the roster move, president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail declined comment.

Trades need approval only when a significant amount of money is part of the deal, so the Padres are likely picking up a chunk of the remaining $2.3 million from Tejada's $6 million deal.

Triple-A Norfolk third baseman Josh Bell is on his way to the majors, a source said.

Hopefully something is coming this way that can actually contribute. Granted Miggy is long past his prime, so I can't see any bigger prospects coming East, so I'll just continue to hope.

Wynn Pelzer turned 24 years of age one month ago and has posted a 4.20 ERA and 1.66 WHIP over 94 1/3 innings this season at Double-A San Antonio. He's had serious control problems in his last two minor league seasons and will need to rectify that issue before he can be considered a promising relief or rotation prospect. This was a salary dump for the O's

His numbers did look pretty ugly although Baseball America had him as the Padres 7th best prospect coming into the 2010, with the best fastball and slider in the organization. BA also had him as the Padres closer by 2013.

Closers and control issues don't mix.

Jay, I guess it gives Bell some playing time at 3rd
Miggy was out the door anyway, i didnt expect much in return

I will have to dig up a list of 2011 free agents ...just for kicks

Now if we can only find a taker for Millwood so Tillman can stay in the rotation.

Isn't Carl Crawford a FA after the season? I mean there's a better chance of the Orioles signing me as a 2011 free agent, but I can dream can't I?

I'm not sure the O's needed a salary dump necessarily, but I like the move to get Bell in the majors playing every day. I still remember being at Fanfest this year and the news broke while I was in a line that Tejada signed, I wasn't all that excited so I'm not too disappointed to see him go.

Any more up your sleeve Andy?

Oh and Jay, I think everyone here would play for the league minimum so we're the exact bargain the O's like.

CBSSports.com  Headlines
The Orioles acquired SP Wynn Pelzer from the Padres on Thursday in exchange for 3B Miguel Tejada and cash considerations. The 24-year-old right-hander went 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA in 22 appearances (18 starts) for Double-A San Antonio this season. Pelzer, a ninth-round pick in the 2007 amateur draft, has gone 26-23 with a 3.83 ERA in parts of three seasons.
(Updated 07/29/2010).
Fantasy Analysis
Pelzer has never played in the majors but could help out the O's either in the bullpen or as a starter. The former Gamecock was a closer in college but worked more out of the rotation this season in the minors. His value is low to minimal right now but Fantasy owners in AL-only formats might want to keep an eye on Pelzer to see if he will get a shot at the bigs this season.

A little different take on Pelzer. What a name, Wynn Pelzer. If he beans a lot of guys he could be Pelt-zer, or just call him Luckey if he ever plays MLB.

Here is the skinny, I guess. I don't know who writes this stuff. If they are anything like market analysts, it doesn't mean much. If he is struggling in A-ball, that doesn't say much for him. Tejada is worth a lot more than he is right now, but all in all, Tejada isn't part of the plan, so he didn't cost much.
I think Andy could/should have did a little better. If he didn't drop the ball on this one, he bobbled it, like a juggler. Not one for the resume. But regardless of how it unfolds, it was harmless.
And what the hell is cash considerations? Is that a way to keep the amount disclosed, or are they considering paying? Most likely, it was a toxic-asset derivative swap.

Shame he can't manage ohmy.gif

This is interesting. They rate him 5 of 11 players involved in deals. CBS guys usually seem to keep up with their homework.

We will break down all the trade-deadline deals in this column through Saturday, so check back frequently to get the skinny on what the Fantasy deals behind the baseball deals are, focusing on the immediately ramifications below. We will also rank the prospects flipped in deals, ranking them for long-term keeper stashee purposes right here:

1. Brett Wallace, 1B, Astros ... changing leagues
* His acquisition signals a likely deal of Lance Berkman before the deadline. He is a potential masher.
2. Anthony Gose, OF, Blue Jays ... changing leagues
* This 19-year-old burner reminds us of a Carlos Gomez, which isn't as much of a criticism as it sounds.
3. Lucas May, C, Royals ... changing leagues
* He could be the Royals' starting catcher in 2011, sharing time with Jason Kendall in September.
4. Pat Corbin, SP, D-Backs ... changing leagues
* The lefty has handled the famously hitter-friendly California League; could arrive midseason 2011.
5. Wynn Pelzer, SP, Orioles ... changing leagues
* We expect he will be yet another good organizational arm that won't impact Fantasy because it is the O's.
6. Jonathan Villar, SS, Astros
* To reference another Brewer burner, Villar is a 19-year-old Dominican similar to Alcides Escobar.
7. Giovanni Soto, SP, Indians
* His numbers apparently much better than his stuff, but he is just a 19-year-old Puerto Rican lefty.
8. Omar Poveda, SP, Marlins
* The Venezuelan is currently on the 60-day DL after season-ending Tommy John surgery in February.
9. Elisaul Pimentel, SP, Royals ... changing leagues
* Dominican right-hander, 22, is a bit old for low Class A, so he could move up quicker than others.
10. Rafael Rodriguez, RP, D-Backs ... changing leagues
* A mess of a bullpen could use this arm in the second half, but he doesn't look like a potential closer.
11. Evan Reed, RP, Marlins ... changing leagues
* Speaking of teams that need a new bullpen -- Reed could develop into a solid major-league reliever.

But does he have a big butt? Buck likes a big butt?

QUOTE
Texas Rangers manager and current ESPN analyst Buck Showalter reportedly decreed that players with flat butts do not succeed in Major League Baseball.
And
Buck Showalter's wisdom vis-a-vis the butt's importance in baseball. "You don’t see a lot of good power hitters or good pitchers that generate arm speed that don’t have a good, high butt on them," Showalter said on ESPN's Baseball Tonight. And who, according to Showalter, best exemplifies high-buttedness? Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee. "I don’t want to say he’s got a perfect butt, but when I look at it I say, Wow."

I hope Buck says "Wow" about Peltzer.

I like big butts and I cannot lie.
My other bruthas can't deny.

I'm with Milt on this one. The O's got a prospect who isn't a complete tomato can. Pretty good value for a 36 year old converted 3B on a one year contract whose numbers have been dropping like a stone. He's listed as a SP here, but I've also seen Pelzer identified as a future back of the bullpen guy.

I think it would have been hard for MacPhail to get much more in return than that.

EDIT: Here's a decent writeup on Wynn Pelzer:

Just wanted to add to the list of prospects above, Wilson Ramos. He's the catcher that the Nats got in exchange for Matt Capps and I keep hearing he is a pretty good one. I think it signals that Bryce Harper might be moving positions. Probably also a sign that there is something very wrong with Jesus Flores.
